Hort NZ submission to MBIE, Feb 2020
In late 2019, the government consulted with New Zealanders on plans to reduce or eliminate the use of fossil fuels, including coal, from industrial processes in New Zealand.
In its submission, Horticulture New Zealand raised serious concerns about plans to ban the use of coal for industrial users with temperature requirements below 300°C, which would include vegetable growers.
On page 3 of the submission, Horticulture NZ highlights the devastating impact a ban on coal would have on the sector.

NZIER ETS report
The New Zealand Institute for Economic Research carried out analysis on the impact the New Zealand Emission Trading Scheme is having on New Zealand’s covered crop growers, and the impact it could/would have at higher prices.
The estimates for the impact on the sector’s viability at different prices for units under the ETS is available on page 8 of the report, which is available here.

In its submission, Horticulture New Zealand raised serious concerns about plans to ban the use of coal for industrial users with temperature requirements below 300°C, which would include vegetable growers.
On page 20 of the submission, Horticulture NZ stresses there is no viable alternative to coal boilers for South Island growers.

MIA submission on accelerating renewable energy and energy efficiency
In a submission to the government on the costs of removing coal and natural gas from industrial activity in New Zealand, the Meat Industry Association drew attention to the costs that would place on the meat industry.

Fonterra Climate Change Commission submission
During consultation on its draft advice, the Climate Change Commission received 15,000 submissions.
In Fonterra’s submission, the cooperative explained, due to the costs of doing so, it has no plans to electrify any of its boilers.

ANZCO submission on accelerating renewable energy and energy efficiency
In a submission to the government on the costs of removing coal and natural gas from industrial activity in New Zealand, meat processor, ANZCO, explained the costs the company would face if it could no longer use coal.
ANZCO stated on page 2 that it operates in a low-margin business, and on the same page that the capital costs required, and the increase in ongoing operating costs, are just too high.

The Ministry for Primary Industries each year publishes its National Exotic Forest Description report.

Scion report
Scion is a Crown funded research institute for the forestry sector.
In a 2018 technical report on biofuels, it stated its not usually feasible to transport feedstocks (wood, wood residues) long distances. This statement can be found on page 71, under the heading ‘Competition for Biomass’.
