Waitaha facts
Electricity company, Westpower Ltd, applied for permission from the Department of Conservation to construct, operate, and maintain a run-of-river hydro scheme on the West Coast of the South Island. If developed, the company estimated the supply of renewable electricity generated would have prevented CO2 emissions per year of about 51,120 tonnes.

David Parker’s letter
This application was declined not due to the impact on plant and animal life, which Minister for Environment, David Parker, considered to be minor, but due to the impact on the character of the area, and kayaking.

PCE hot-water
In 2010, Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment, Jan Wright, investigated the potential environmental benefits of public subsidies for solar hot water heating.
In chapter 5 of this report, New Zealand’s electricity sector’s emissions intensity and impact on the environment is analysed, including the cycle of demand throughout the day and the year, and the corresponding impact on how much fossil fuel is used to generate electricity.

Genesis Energy 2020 annual report
Genesis Energy is a state-owned-enterprise in which the New Zealand Crown has approximately a 51% shareholding.
Every year it publishes its annual reports, which are available on the company’s website.
In its 2020 annual report, Genesis Energy explained the role of its gas and coal fired Huntly power plant, and the complexities of removing that plant from New Zealand’s electricity sector, which can be found on from page 17 and 18.

Genesis Energy 2020 annual report
Genesis Energy is a state-owned-enterprise in which the New Zealand Crown has approximately a 51% shareholding.
Every year it publishes its annual reports, which are available on the company’s website.
In its report, on page 16, it says it plans to phase out coal use under normal market conditions by 2025 – but that gas will be required for many years to come.

Gas production profile
The Major Gas Users Group, as the name suggests, is a group representing major gas users.
The graph forecasting fast declining natural gas production was part of a submission to the government in 2018 on the practicalities of reducing fossil fuel use in the energy sector.
The forecasts in the graph are based on government forecasts from 2018, which have not materially changed since then.

Interim Climate Change Committee report
The Interim Climate Change Committee’s (the Climate Change Commission’s predecessor) report on accelerated electrification, published in early 2019 noted that under normal market conditions, New Zealand will reach an average of 93% renewable electricity by 2035.
